Slide 3/23

All techniques used in our studies, Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultrasound echography (US), give information on the thickness and structure of various skin layers in the epidermis and dermis. The properties of the different imaging techniques, like the field of view, penetration depth into the skin and resolution, are indicated in this slide. In general, we can say, the larger the penetration depth the lower the resolution. The penetration depth into the skin of the optical techniques is limited to at most 1 mm, and the epidermis and the superficial part of the dermis can be imaged with great detail. On the other hand, with ultrasound the penetration depth is high enough to study the whole dermis, however, at the cost of resolution.
