The FDA prescription for PDT

Table of Contents | PREVIOUS PAGE | NEXT PAGE

The FDA specifies a prescription for PDT in terms of the DRUG ADMINISTERED and the LIGHT ADMINISTERED. This prescription is based on clinical trials to test safety and efficacy.

However, there can be significant patient-to-patient and site-to-site variation in the DRUG ACCUMULATION in a tissue and the LIGHT RECEIVED by a tissue. Our goal is to document such variation using in vivo optical measurements just prior to PDT treatment in patients receiving the standard FDA prescription.

Drug dose is specified as mg of drug per kg of body weight [mg/kg].
Light dose is specified as J of light per length of cylindrical diffusing fiber tip [J/cm]
These values vary with the photosensitizer used and the tissue treated, for example the esophagus or the bronchus.
