Phthalocyanine (Pc)

The chemical structure of Phthalocyanine (Pc) is shown at the right. The absorption and fluorescence emission spectra are shown below. The structure, absorption, and fluorescence data were all obtained from the PhotochemCAD package by Jonathan Lindsey. This excellent program allows rapid comparison of spectra and enables one to do a variety of photochemically relevant calculations. Chemical Structure

Absorption Spectrum

This is a graph of the molar extinction coefficient of Phthalocyanine (Pc) dissolved in chloronaphthalene. It was measured by R. A. Fuh on summer, 95 [H. Du, R. A. Fuh, J. Li, A. Corkan, J. S. Lindsey, "PhotochemCAD: A computer-aided design and research tool in photochemistry," Photochemistry and Photobiology, 68, 141-142, 1998]. Phthalocyanine (Pc) has a molar extinction coefficient of 162,000 M-1cm-1 at 698.5 nm [M. Whalley, "Conjugated macrocycles. Part XXXII. Absorption spectra of tetrazaporphyrins and phthalocyanines. Formation of pyridine salts.," J. Chem. Soc., 866-869, 1961].

The fluorescence yield is reported to be 0.67 in toluene [A. T. Gradyushko, A. N. Sevchenko, K. N. Solovyov, and M. P. Tsvirko, "Energetics of photophysical processes in chlorophyll-like molecules," Photochem. Photobiol., 11, 387-400, 1970].

Emission Spectrum

This is the fluorescence emission spectrum of Phthalocyanine (Pc) dissolved in chloronaphthalene. The spectrum was taken by R. A. Fuh on summer, 95 using an excitation wavelength of 635 nm [H. Du, R. A. Fuh, J. Li, A. Corkan, J. S. Lindsey, "PhotochemCAD: A computer-aided design and research tool in photochemistry," Photochemistry and Photobiology, 68, 141-142, 1998]. The quantum yield is 0.60 [P. G. Seybold and M. Gouterman, "Porphyrins XIII: Fluorescence spectra and quantum yields.," J. Mol. Spectroscopy, 31, 1-13, 1969].
